History

Pooler’s Tapestry: A Journey Through Time

From Whistle Stop to Bustling Hub

Pooler’s roots trace back to the 1830s when the Central of Georgia Railroad was being built. The city’s namesake, Captain Robert William Pooler, played a crucial role in surveying the route, and the rail station established here was named in his honor. During the Civil War, Pooler (then known as Pooler’s Station) served as the last rail stop before Savannah. In December 1864, Pooler witnessed a pivotal moment in history when Union officers led by General Sherman met with Savannah authorities to negotiate the city’s surrender.

A Catalyst for Growth

Following the Civil War, Pooler entered a period of slow but steady growth. The arrival of visionary Ben Rothwell in 1883 marked a turning point. He pioneered a unique community development strategy: offering free lots to those who would build permanent homes. This initiative spurred the establishment of the first Baptist Church and a sawmill, laying the foundation for future expansion.

Pooler Incorporated

In 1907, with a population of around 337 residents, Pooler took a significant step by incorporating as a town under its first Mayor H.G. Beaufort. The first town hall served as a symbol of the growing community and a center for local governance. The early 1900s also saw Pooler welcoming its first woman alderman, Mrs. Gary Goggins (Lola), who was notably one of the first women to vote in Georgia.

A Legacy of Progress

Over the past century, Pooler has witnessed remarkable growth. The establishment of banks, retail stores, professional offices, and warehouses transformed the landscape. Today, Pooler is a hub for commerce in west Chatham County, attracting major businesses like JCB.
